Correlation between school dropout and gross domestic product in the emerging countries of Central and Eastern Europe
2020
By school dropout is meant leaving the educational system, regardless of the reached level, before obtaining a qualification or a complete proffesional training or before the end of the study cycle started (Doron & Parot, 2006). Although there are numerous researches on school dropout, we consider that it is necessary to study the relationship it has with the level of development of a country, in order to identify new causes and possible solutions to this phenomenon. In this study we included seven emerging countries of Central and Eastern Europe: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary. Thus, we analyzed the correlation between the annual gross domesti…
Turma Alfa: a dilemática fronteira entre práticas educativas inclusivas e práticas educativas exclusivas
2018
Abstract: This paper stems from an ongoing investigation on the theme "Educating places: practices, voices and pathways of inclusive education”. This project seeks to answer, among others, the following questions: i) which processes and factors, subjects, action rationales and (institutional, local, community) partnerships contribute to building local inclusive education practices, in the views of actors involved?; ii) which (social, institutional, biographical) processes and factors stop the negative spiral of school underachievement, school dropout and early school leaving and favour the youngsters’ remobilization to learn and build successful academic pathways? The study design consists o…
Trajectories of Prosocial Behavior and Physical Aggression in Middle Childhood: Links to Adolescent School Dropout and Physical Violence
2006
Trajectories of prosocial behavior and physical aggression between 6 and 12 years of age were identified for a sample (N=1,025) of males. The trajectories were then used to predict school dropout and physical violence at age 17. Using a group-based semi-parametric method, two trajectories of prosociality (low and moderate declining) and three trajectories of physical aggression (low, moderate, and high declining) were obtained. Only a small minority (3.4%) of the boys were characterized by both high aggression and moderate prosociality. Physical aggression predicted both school dropout and physical violence, but contrary to expectations, prosocial behavior did not have additive or protectiv…
The role of psychological inflexibility in adolescent satisfaction with the educational track and school dropout intentions
2022
This study aimed to obtain novel understanding of the associations between psychological inflexibility and adolescents' engagement with upper secondary studies. The participants were 885 Finnish adolescents (mean age 15.74 at the outset) whose psychological inflexibility was measured with the short form of the Acceptance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth (AFQ-Y8) in the fall of the final (ninth) grade of basic education. School engagement was measured as satisfaction with the educational track and as school dropout intentions, and they were measured twice in the first study year after the transition to upper secondary education. The results showed that high psychological inflexibility in t…
Les élèves français et québécois à risque de décrochage scolaire : comparaison entre les facteurs de risque personnels, familiaux et scolaires
2011
This comparative study aimed to compare factors that are associated to the risk of dropping out of school amongst students from lower secondary school (12-16) in France (Aquitaine) and Quebec (Estrie). Results indicate that the factors that differentiate at risk and non at risk students are personal, family and school factors with a predominance of school factors whichever the country. This research work confirms the complexity of factors that impact on early school leaving and the necessity of devising multi-level interventions while considering the diversity of school droppers.
Student Engagement, Truancy, and Cynicism
2021
Abstract Truancy in upper secondary education is a widespread problem, which contributes significantly to school dropout risk. However, the underlying mechanisms of truancy have remained unstudied. This longitudinal study of 1853 Finnish students examined how initial levels and changes in student engagement from primary (Grade 6) to lower secondary school (Grades 7 and 9) predicted truancy in upper secondary education, and whether cynicism (losing interest in school) mediated the relationship between engagement and truancy. Growth curve models showed that high engagement levels in primary school and increases in engagement over time predicted less truancy in upper secondary education. Cynic…
2020
Abstract A person-centered approach was used to identify the profiles of symptoms of psychological ill-being among Finnish upper secondary education students (N = 2889); to examine whether gender and educational track (i.e., academic or vocational) are associated with these profiles; and to investigate the role of profiles in school dropout intentions. Using latent profile analysis, one asymptomatic profile (normative, 79.2%) and three symptomatic profiles (internalizing symptoms, 9.1%; externalizing symptoms, 9.1%; and comorbid symptoms, 2.6%) were identified. Boys in the vocational track were overrepresented in the externalizing-symptoms profile, whereas girls in both tracks were overrepr…

Dropout intentions in secondary education : Student temperament and achievement motivation as antecedents
2023
Introduction As early school leaving and dropping out from education pose a challenge for later life adjustment, it is important to identify antecedent factors for the risk of school dropout to tailor individual support for adolescents. Consequently, this study examines the role of adolescents' motivational beliefs and behaviors (i.e., success expectations, planning, and task-avoidance) as well as their temperament (i.e., extraversion/surgency, negative affectivity, effortful control, and affiliativeness) in their dropout intentions in the first year of upper secondary education. Methods Participants were Finnish adolescents' (n = 536; 57% girls, mean age 12.39 at outset, standard deviation…
